Homeowner Learning #346

October 30, 2005
Ever since I bought my condo, I realize there is a bunch of stuff that I never learned, that I need to pick up.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have made an effort to make my bathroom fan work better; the bathroom was getting way too misty and sweaty after taking a shower. Along with replacing the electric outlet to be a 60-minute timer, I started trying to clean the fan. I clearly had never cleaned out the dust over the past couple of years, and from looking at it, it appears the guy I bought from never cleaned it either. I just never knew or realized it was something to worry about.

It was really gross in there. There is all sorts of "gunk" in there, and it was rather difficult to clean. Neither my vacuum or hand-vac were powerful enough, so I bought a Euro-Pro Shark, 700 W from Bed Bath and Beyond (with the obligatory 20% discount from the myriad of coupons I have from them). While that is one powerful machine (and a great buy at $14.99-20% off), it still wasn’t enough.
Thankfully, I realized that the fan actually came down with a few key screw-removals (of course; watch out – some of the gunk may fall on your head as you remove it. Not saying that I got hit with that or anything — urghh). Using a screwdriver head, I was able to remove most of the rest of the gunk, and the Euro-Shark got the rest… I now have a clean fan!

I am excited to shower and see how much of a difference it makes.

Lesson – everything in your house needs cleaning every now and then; especially if it’s job is to collect gunk from elsewhere.

Lasik in Seattle (i.e. No more Glasses!)

October 6, 2005
Since I had Lasik in January of this year, lots of people have asked me about my experience and where to go. First, I love it! I went from 20-100 (which is granted, not too bad, but I did wear glasses full time, and thought contacts were gross) to 20-10 pretty much the next day, and haven’t had any complications/halos/or anything else. Granted, it depends on your eyes, surgeon, and luck, so your mileage may vary. Here’s my tips:
  • I used http://www.pcli.com, Dr. Ford, and have had no complaints. He was the one I got the most recommendations on. For more reports on him, see: http://blogs.msdn.com/ericlippert/archive/2004/03/15/89889.aspx
  • He is $1400/eye, and your own eye doctor does (nearly) all followup, which I liked, since it’s less biased than the surgeons office.
  • It’s not the “newest” lasik, but I wanted to go with a more proven technology, and my eyes weren’t so awful to need the newest ones.
  • They give free “enhancements” (if you need, I don’t) for life, as long as you see your eye dr. every year. Most places only offer 1 year.
  • I’ve heard good things about U-W’s refractive surgery clinic, but they were more expensive, plus only did the 1 year.
  • One thing I was told by everyone: If they advertise (lomas eye care center, kmlasik.com, etc…), or offer $295 an eye: Don’t go there. It’s not worth the risk.
  • Here’s another good writeup: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/PermaLink.aspx?guid=1cd8a9f8-bd4a-4229-8609-9a583d7eb2df
  • It’s best, economically (for Microsoft employees at least), to do it in January, since you can sign up for FSA and make it pre-tax during November’s open enrollment.

Regarding wavefront and halos:

  • From the little research I did it into (Wavefront) yes, there is a benefit there. It depends on what your eyes are and where they are at. The 3 drs I talked to all said, for me, my eyes were at the range where I shouldn’t expect to see halos post-surgery (and I haven’t), and thus, it wasn’t an issue.
  • It depends on how/what your eyes are.
  • One of my good friends got wavefront done at http://www.bellevue-lasik.com/ and had great results.

(Note: these are all my own opinions; you should do your own research before having lasik, of course).

Lasik

Lasik this morning. Can’t sleep. Wonder if that’s related.

Birthday!

December 21, 2004
It’s my birthday today, and in honor, of that, I finally decided to make use of the averbuch.net domain name I have owned for years… it redirects to this space, so when I finally decide what to write here, at least I have an easy way to tell people about it :)
